Mexican tenor, Luis Chapa made his Metropolitan Opera debut recently as Pinkerton in Anthony Minghella’s production of Madama Butterfly. Praised for his “mellifluous, stupendously-powerful” voice, Chapa is known as one of the best exponents of the dramatic repertoire of his generation.


Recent highlights include Don Jose in Carmen for Aalto theatre Essen, Tosca for Opera North, Carmen and Calaf for Slovakian National Opera, debuts at “Enti Concerti Marialisa di Carolis” in Sassari, Calgari as Luighi in Il Tabarro, the Israeli Opera as Canio, Calaf and Don Jose for Seattle Opera, title role Stiffelio at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, title role Andrea Chenier and Don José Carmen at the National Theatre in Prague, Canio Pagliacci at Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Radames Aida at Opera North and Teatro Wielki Poland and the Roman Amphitheatre Arena Pula for the Croatian National Theatre.

Chapa has previously sung for Portland Opera as Pinkerton, the title role Tannhäuser at Tiroler Festspiele Erl, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and Teatro Amazonas Manaus, Brazil, title role Otello in Zagreb, Rjieka and Ostrava, Canio at Teatr Wielki Poznan, Pinkerton at Aalto Theater Essen, Teatro Verdi di Trieste and with Guiyang Symphony Orchestra, China, Andrea Chenier and Don José in Prague, Pollione Norma at Opera North, Des Grieux Manon Lescaut in Catania, Samson Samson et Dalila at Staatstheater Darmstadt, Manrico Il trovatore and Don José in Hong Kong. Other successes include Otello in Calixto Bieto’s production at Theater Basel, his US debut as Don José at Seattle Opera and later return as Calaf Turandot.

On the concert platform, Chapa has sung Leoncavallo’s La Nuit de Mai for Košice Music Spring Festival in Slovakia and for the Slovakian Nationa Opera, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde for Slovenian National Opera, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with the Orquesta Sinfonica of Nuevo Leon, Verdi Requiem with Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, Verdi galas with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Pamplona, Puccini programme with the BBC Concert Orchestra, and appeared with the Orquesta sinfonica Nacional de Bogota. Chapa has worked with many notable conductors and directors, including Marco Armilliato, Donato Renzetti, Asher Fish, Gustav Kuhn, Oliver von Dohnányi, Sir Richard Armstrong, Alexander Joel, John Copley, Christopher Alden, Calixto Bieito, Mariusz Trelinski, and David McVicar amongst others.
